2012 is Upon Us

Well, assuming the Mayans were wrong, we’re planning our 2012 festival. We don’t have details yet but please check his space in May for an update, and we plan to have applications for the fest available in June or so. Thanks!

Fest Coverage…

Well, there’s plenty on Facebook and Twitter about BCGF. Check out these photos of the rock show Friday night at Time Out. Here’s a nice summary from Tom Spurgeon at Comics Reporter and a photo set from Chris Mautner at Robot 6. Publishers Weekly weighs in with a very positive report and photo set. Even Mad Magazine gets in on the fun…

The two longest reports have come in from Sean T. Collins at Robot 6, who calls BCGF “The only con that matters” and Comics Alliance’s Matt Seneca, who flew across country for us and highlights some of his favorite books.

Tonight the party starts man! Get it moving.

Thursday, December 1: Eurocomics Psychocinema: Master Kriminals
$5 per movie / $8 double feature

7:30: KiLiNK Istanbul’da (Yilmaz Atadeniz dir., 1967)
In 1962  Angela and Luciana Giussani created the Italian super-criminal Diabolik, a villainous comic book protagonist who scoffed at the law in superb style. Legions of imitators followed, including Kriminal, a cold blooded master thief in a skull-faced body stocking, who was in turn ripped off in the photo-comics series Killing. Turkish filmmaker Yilmaz Atadeniz extended the chain of bootleged influence one link further, directing a trilogy of freewheeling black and white features starring KiLiNK, now a skeletoid Turkish master criminal with an eye for the dames and a thirst for world domination. In this first film of the series, KiLiNK faces off against the equally unauthorized do-gooder antagonist “Superhero,” a beefy mash-up of Superman, Shazam and the Phantom.

9:30: Danger: Diabolik (Mara Bava dir., 1968)
The diabolical one who started it all comes to life in Mario Bava’s stylish, candy colored cult classic. Bava, best known as the horror director who launched the giallo genre, here effectively recreates the skewed compositions and deep-focused perspective of the pulpy adventure comics from which Diabolik sprang. John Philip Law (who in that same year also appeared in the similarly comics-derived Barbarella) brings the criminal mastermind to life as a lithe, cool customer, melting only under the influence of his purring girlfriend and accomplice, Eva Kant (Melissa Mel). Clips from this film were used to great effect in the Beastie Boys’ 1998 video “Body Movin.’”

Captain Matthew Thurber reports in that he’ll be bringing an all-prose zine to the Fest. Someone forgot to tell him it’s Comics and Graphics ONLY. Thurber will be blocked at the door. But if he manages to get through, you can look for Are Snakes Necessary.

More to come…

Chris Pitzer Reports for Duty

Chris Pitzer reports in on what’s the what for Adhouse at BCGF. He notes:

What do we have planned for this year? Well, how about all the new books we’ve published since the last Fest? We’re talking around eight freakin’ titles… which is HUGE for lil’ ol’ us.

We’ll also have the uber-talented EthanRilly and LamarAbrams on hand to wax all poetic like. (As the fab BCGF site states, Lamar will even have a new item…  Ferzan Dr3i.)

There seems to be a slew of cool debut items at the show. What are we looking forward to the most?

- Meeting Alex from Nobrow. (We got to meet Sam at TCAF, and he was awesome.)
- Checking out the new Kramers
- Seeing Annie Koyama again. She is the mostest. (And new Deforgio comics!)
- Meeting some artists we admire like JesseRomanBenjie
- I hope AsiaDog is back again this year.

If you want to check out the American Barbarian, just ask. And like any long distance travel show, get there early for the best selection.

That’s what we call planning. More to come.

Michael DeForge Talks BCGF Debuts

The unstoppable Michael DeForge talks about comics he’s bringing to the BCGF:

I’m bringing Open Country #2 and Kid Mafia #1 there (and they’re already available for sale at The Beguiling, if you live in Toronto.) Thanks to Jesjit for printing OC for me. Also launching at the show are some anthologies I’m in, including  Studygroup Magazine #1! Here’s a color test Zack made of one of my pages in it. I’m excited to see how the color combo looks in person.

Michael also drew a massive six-page cyberpunk comic, written by Benjamin Marra, for the new issue of Smoke Signal, debuting at the show — and there’s more. Catch Michael at the Koyama Press table.
